SwimSwam thanks SwimmersBest for sponsoring “Drill of the Month.” This is a SwimSwam recurring feature that brings drills and idea submissions from various creative and innovative coaches all over the world.

March’s SwimmersBest Drill of the Month comes to us from Zach Mertens, a third-year assistant coach at Drury University.

Mertens graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in 2014 with a degree in History and Political Science and was an Academic All-NSISC Team 2013 and 2014. He previously served as head coach for the Columbia Public Schools swimming & diving programs, serving Hickman, Rock Bridge, and Battle High Schools. Under his leadership, Columbia teams produced three state champions and eight that finished in the top four at the state championships.

While hunkered down at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mertens suggests that swimmers work on their posture. In the video below, he describes how to actively correct posture, whether sitting down or standing.
